Paper isn’t dead

I’m all for going green. I’ve downloaded magazines & books to my ipad to save space in my bag when I’m on the go, but as I mentioned earlier, it’s always a good idea to unplug every day. It’s so easy to get sucked into the internet, especially when you have a lot to do. When was the last time you got a letter in the mail? Finding a nice, old fashioned hand written letter among all that junk mail and bills is really refreshing. Sure, there’s email and texting, but there’s something special about handwritten notes. Maybe it’s the extra effort someone put into writing and mailing the letter, but I’m always happy when I get one in the mail. After a friend of mine wrote me a simple letter, I was inspired to do the same. Likewise, when another mama in my mommy & me playgroup pulled out an agenda to write things down instead of her phone, it inspired me to do the same. Yes, I love my iCal, but it has failed me every now & then, and instead of saving all the scrap paper and reminder cards with all my appointments, I’d rather write it all down on a planner. It also helps me remember things  better too. I always felt like I was attached to my computer, but now with a little one, I need to discipline myself not to get sucked in. Writing letters, journal entries, and plans are just some of the things I do.

I can only imagine what technology will bring by the time Andrew is in kindergarten. No matter how advanced as things get, I want to make it a point to teach him the art of letter writing. That’s one of the simpler things I hope never gets forgotten as things go digital.

So how bout you? Do you like writing letters every now & then? How about writing things down in a planner or journal? Do you teach, or plan to teach your kids how to write letters?
